Terms of Service
These terms are an agreement between you and [company legal name] ("Ọnà", "we", "us"), a company registered in Nigeria. They cover the Ọnà rider app, the Ọnà Pilot driver app and onarides.com. By creating an account you agree to them, and to our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle your personal data.
Sections 1 to 5 and 7 to 12 apply to everyone. Section 6, the Driver Terms, also applies if you drive with Ọnà Pilot.

1. What Ọnà is
Ọnà is an app that connects people who want a ride ("riders") with drivers who provide one. The drivers are independent: they are not our employees, and they choose when to drive and which trips to accept. We provide the apps, matching, payments, and the safety tools described in these terms.
2. Your account
- You must be at least 18 years old and have a Nigerian mobile number.
- One phone number can hold one rider account and one driver account. You can't drive your own ride.
- The information you give us must be true and your own, including your name, date of birth and NIN. Riders must complete their identity details before booking.
- You are responsible for what happens on your account. Don't share your sign-in codes or let anyone else use your account.
- You can delete your account at any time; see Deleting your account.
3. Riding with Ọnà
- When you book, we show you the fare and offer your trip to nearby drivers. If no driver accepts within a couple of minutes, the request is cancelled and you can try again.
- When a driver accepts, the app shows their first name, photo, car and plate. Check the car and plate before you get in. If they don't match, don't get in, and report it.
- Give the driver your trip code to start the trip. Never get into a car before the driver has started the trip in the app.
- You can cancel a trip from the app. Cancelling is currently free. If we introduce cancellation or waiting fees, the app will show them before you book, and they won't apply to trips booked before the change.
- You're responsible for any damage you cause to a driver's car beyond normal wear.
4. Fares and payment
- The fare shown when you book is the fare you pay. It's worked out from the distance between pickup and drop-off, and doesn't change with traffic or the route taken.
- You choose to pay by cash or card when you book, and you can't change it afterwards.
- Cash: pay the driver the fare at the end of the trip. The trip is marked paid when it ends.
- Card: you need a saved card to book by card. Your default card is charged the fare when the trip ends. If the charge fails, the app asks you to pay another way, and you must pay what you owe.
- Cards are added and charged through Paystack. You can save up to three. When you add a card, Paystack charges ₦50 to check it, and we refund it.
- If you think you were charged wrongly, contact us within 30 days of the trip.
5. Safety and Night Guard
- Ọnà is not an emergency service. In danger, call 112. The app's emergency button calls 112 through your phone and shows you the car, the plate and where you are, so you can tell them.
- Either person on a trip may record audio from the safety tools. Recordings stay on the phone that made them and are only sent to us if attached to a safety report. You agree that the other person on your trip may record it.
- Night Guard applies to every trip booked between 21:00 and 05:00 Lagos time, and to any trip still going at 21:00. It can't be switched off. Under Night Guard:
- the driver's phone records the trip;
- the app may ask either of you whether you're all right, and an unanswered check is flagged to our team;
- riders must have verified their identity to book;
- anyone with an open safety report against them can't take night trips until it is resolved.
- You can report a safety problem from the trip or your receipt, up to 7 days after a trip. Our team reviews reports, but we can't promise how quickly anyone will respond to a flagged check or a report.
More detail on recordings and the data Night Guard uses is in the Privacy Policy.
6. Driver Terms
This section is the Driver Terms, version 2026-10, which you agree to when you sign up in Ọnà Pilot.
6.1 Who can drive
- You must hold a valid Nigerian driver's licence, and drive in a city we operate in (currently Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt).
- Your car must be from 2010 or newer, roadworthy, registered and insured. In Lagos you also need a roadworthiness certificate and a LASDRI card.
- You must upload your documents, a photo of your car with the plate showing, and a selfie, and we must approve them before you can go online. The car details you give must match your car.
- You agree to identity checks against NIMC and FRSC records. We may refuse or remove an account that doesn't pass our checks.
- Once you're approved, the name on your account can't be changed in the app, because payouts go to an account in that name.
6.2 Keeping your papers current
Each document's expiry date is on file. We remind you before one runs out. When one has expired you can't go online until you've uploaded the renewal.
6.3 Driving
- You choose when you go online and which trips you accept. If you don't respond to several offers in a row, or your app stops reporting, we take you offline; you can go online again.
- Only you may drive on your account, in the car registered on it.
- Start a trip only after the rider gives you their trip code and is in the car. Follow the law, including traffic and road-safety rules, and don't drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- At night, you need to allow the microphone to go online, and your phone records each trip under Night Guard.
6.4 Money
- Commission. We charge a commission on each trip, currently 10% of the fare. The app shows the current rate. We'll tell you at least 14 days before it changes.
- Cash trips: you collect the full fare from the rider, and owe us the commission.
- Card trips: we collect the fare and owe you the fare minus the commission.
- These are netted into one balance, shown in the app. If you owe us money from before today, you must pay it before you can go online. You can pay by card in the app, or it can be cleared from your card-trip earnings.
- Payouts. What we owe you is paid to your bank account every Monday, by bank transfer at no charge to you, once it's at least ₦1,000. The account must be in your own name.
- You're responsible for your own taxes, and for any licences or permits your city requires for commercial driving.
6.5 Your relationship with us
You use Ọnà Pilot as an independent driver. Nothing in these terms makes you our employee, worker, agent or partner. You can stop driving with us at any time by deleting your account; we'll settle what we owe you first.
7. How everyone must behave
Riders and drivers must not:
- threaten, harass, assault or discriminate against anyone;
- use the service for anything illegal, or carry illegal items;
- ask for or offer payment outside the app's fare, or arrange trips outside the app with people you met through it;
- use another person's account, or give false information;
- misuse the safety tools, such as by filing false reports;
- use the contact details you get through a trip for anything other than that trip.
Ratings and comments must be honest and about the trip.
8. Suspension and closing accounts
We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, puts someone's safety at risk, or is used for fraud. Where it's safe and lawful to, we'll tell you why and give you a chance to respond. Safety reports don't suspend anyone automatically; our team decides.
9. Our responsibility to you
- We work to keep Ọnà available and accurate, but we can't promise it will always work, that a driver will always be available, or that maps and arrival times will always be right.
- Drivers are responsible for how they drive and for their cars, and riders for how they behave on a trip.
- To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect or consequential losses, and our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the fares or payouts involved in the trips the claim concerns.
- Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law doesn't allow us to limit, and nothing takes away your rights under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act.
10. Disputes and the law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. If you have a complaint, contact us first and we'll try to resolve it. If we can't, the courts of [Lagos State] will have jurisdiction.
11. Changes to these terms
We'll update the date at the top when we change these terms. If a change is significant, we'll tell you in the app before it takes effect. If you keep using Ọnà after that, you're agreeing to the new terms. If you don't agree, you can delete your account.
